Ravenna is an extraordinary town which was, in the 5th century, the last capital of the Western Roman Empire, therefore playing a significant role in the history of Europe.
Thanks to its King Theodoric, Ravenna became one of the most important germano-roman towns. Among the evidences of its glorious past are the Basilica, the Baptistery and the Mausoleum.
The harmony of classical architecture merges with the magnificence of precious marbles and rich Byzantine decorations. These go along with the wonderful monuments giving onto the square Piazza del Popolo, which bears witness to the period under Venetian rule. |
